More surprising is the awful scripting of the few female characters. Johnny and beau Billie make a pretty enough couple, but the way Billie fawns over cheesy lines and promises, along with her submissive and dull nature, means that the all-important love story angle comes off half-baked. Had Dillinger’s legend been better established the performance may have been more effective, but as it currently stands her devotion is hard to understand. The Indiana State prison warden gets the worst of it, with her cartoonish foolishness in court at odds with the film’s tone, while various other minor women are largely overlooked. Anna Sage (Branka Katic), a brothel owner who features prominently towards the end is perhaps the only major female character given any real substance in the script. Various women are introduced into the world portrayed here, but it doesn’t take a feminist viewing to realise that they’ve all been underdeveloped.
