Cohen said he decided to withdraw after talking with Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who made it clear stepping aside was the best thing for his career and Democratic Party. But the heat really turned up on Cohen after allegations surfaced he had put a knife to the neck of his ex-girlfriend and that she was a convicted prostitute. Cohen said he’s walking away without any kind of deal from the Democratic leadership to recoup any of his money.
“I ran because I had a genuine interest in helping the people,” said Cohen. “To this point with everything going on with the media, I couldn’t help people. So the money didn’t matter to me.”

Cohen’s ex-girlfriend, 29-year-old Amanda Eneman, is a convicted prostitute. On Saturday, she said she did not think Cohen was fit for public office.
