SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Of all the questions that have riveted Illinois and national media audiences about pawnbroker Scott Lee Cohen’s rise and fall as the state’s Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, the question of who will replace him now that he’s out hasn’t really been a front-burner issue.
This isn’t surprising. Cohen’s shady background, and its potential to torpedo the Democrats’ hold on power, was all that really made this race newsworthy. The lieutenant governor’s post itself has no constitutional duties, and usually is as close to invisible as a statewide office gets. Expect it to return to that status by about this time tomorrow, now that the contest is no longer defined by talk of prostitutes and knives held to throats.
