But it’s not just the story of a company that failed. It’s the story of a town left with a void. Not much is known about what AMCORE’s buyer, Harris Bank, will do (although your money is safe, see box). How many jobs will be retained and how many branches will remain are open questions.
However, it is hard to imagine Harris playing the huge role that AMCORE did on Seventh Street. The bank’s headquarters anchored a neighborhood that fights chronic battles with drug dealing and prostitution. AMCORE had strong loyalty to the Midtown District, however. In recent years, the bank gave incentives to its employees to move into new condos nearby. At the time, a resident was realistic about the long road ahead. “The neighborhood has just been beaten into the ground,” she said.
