No shortage of mayor candidates expected
Posted by Hal Dardick and John Byrne at 2:30 p.m.; updated at 2:50 p.m.Mayor Richard Daley’s surprise decision not to seek re-election unleashes more than two decades of pent-up political ambition in Chicago politics.Daley has been mayor since winning election in 1989 and has faced little to no opposition in rolling up large margins of victory every four years.
Now every politician who has dreamed of replacing Daley will get their chance in next February’s city elections.
One potential candidate is Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who has raised his profile in recent years by going after Craigslist prostitution advertisements and overseeing the cleanup of Burr Oak Cemetery after uncovering a grave-reselling scheme, is one potential candidate.
A Dart spokesman sounded a cautious note today.
