Trustees will review vehicle-impound rules
Niles trustees have tabled a measure that would allow police to seize vehicles of those arrested in the village for a number of offenses, including retail theft, prostitution or solicitation, driving with a suspended or invalid license, DUI or drug or illegal firearm possession.
Trustee Andrew Przybylo said he wanted to remove from that list anyone caught driving with an expired license, saying seizing of a vehicle under those circumstances would be overly punitive. Ultimately, village officials decided they needed more time to study the proposal.
In 2005, only four Illinois communities — Waukegan, Park City, Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights — had criminal vehicle impound ordinances on their books and now 57 municipalities seize vehicles after arrests, officials said.
“Municipalities adopt impound laws because they are considered to be an effective law enforcement tool and the collection of fees associated with this law allow municipalities to recoup a portion of the costs associated with investigating and prosecuting these crimes,” Assistant Village Manager Steve Vinezeano wrote in a memo.
