This award-winning 1973 Broadway musical by composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim and playwright Hugh Wheeler (adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s 1950s film Smiles of a Summer Night) is a lush, romantic operetta about sex, love and the immutable march of time. Although many opera companies have previously tackled A Little Night Music on a grand scale, Writers’ Theatre makes an overwhelming case why the show should be chamber-sized.
There’s no need for microphones in Writers’ Theatre’s intimate space, which prompts all of the performers to sing and speak with welcome annunciated ardor. The audience’s proximity also demands honest performances from the ensemble, and they certainly deliver.
It’s a pleasure to be so close with such a wonderful cast, especially Deanna Dunagan and her regal turn as the aging former courtesan Madame Armfeldt. (This is the first time Dunagan has returned for a long Chicago-area run since originating her Tony Award-winning performance as Violet in Steppenwolf Theatre’s August: Osage County in 2007.)

A Chicago man will appear in court today for forcing females to work as prostitutes. Dajuan Brown, 35, is facing charges that include 10 counts of involuntary sexual servitude and 1 count of aggravated human trafficking.
Cook County Sheriff’s Police took Brown into custody Tuesday morning after learning that he was keeping females against their will, giving them heroine several times a day and forcing them to work as prostitutes, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Tuesday.
Police arrested Brown Tuesday morning at his apartment on the 1400 Block of North Laramie in Chicago. Sheriff’s investigators obtained a search warrant after they learned of drug activity within the apartment and collected statements from witnesses who claimed to have been forced into working for Brown in the past. A search warrant was then executed, and he was taken into custody without incident.

Chicago man accused of human trafficking arrested
Cook County authorities have arrested a Chicago man who allegedly held women against their will, giving them heroin several times a day and forcing them to work as prostitutes.
In a news release, the Cook County Sheriff’s Department says that 35-year-old Dajuan Brown is charged with 10 felony counts of involuntary sexual servitude and one count of aggravated human trafficking.
Brown was arrested Tuesday morning without incident at his apartment on Chicago’s West Side by sheriff’s police who had been told that Brown had been holding women against their will. Two women described as Brown’s victims were in the house at the time.
Brown remained in custody Tuesday afternoon. He’s scheduled to appear in bond court on Wednesday. It’s not immediately clear if he has an attorney.

Man arrested on Chicago’s West Side for “sexual servitude”
Cook County authorities on Tuesday arrested a Chicago man who allegedly held women against their will, giving them heroin several times a day and forcing them to work as prostitutes.
Dajuan Brown, 35, was charged with 10 felony counts of involuntary sexual servitude and one count of aggravated human trafficking, Cook County Sheriff’s Department officials said in a news release.
Brown was arrested Tuesday morning without incident at his apartment on Chicago’s west side by sheriff’s police who had been told that Brown had been holding women against their will.
Two women described as Brown’s victims were in the house at the time. They will be cared for by the sheriff’s Department of Women’s Justice Services, officials said.

Senate hearing set on scandal
WASHINGTON – The chairman of the Senate committee with jurisdiction over homeland security says he has scheduled a hearing for May 23 to review the Secret Service investigation of the Colombia prostitution scandal.
Sen. Joe Lieberman told CNN’s State of the Union that he believes the agency has done a thorough job in investigating the incident. But the Connecticut independent said he also wants to know whether there were warning signs about agents’ behavior. He also wants to hear what steps are being taken to ensure something similar doesn’t happen again.

A 38-year-old Chicago man was charged with solicitation of a sex act Saturday in the 1700 block of Darrow Ave., one block east of Evanston Township High School.
Police initially responded to a robbery call at 9:15 p.m., but when officers arrived on the scene, they determined that the man who called the police had made arrangement to pay for a sex act with an Evanston woman, Parrott said. Two Evanston men, both acquaintances of the woman, threatened the caller and allegedly took some of his property.
Police determined the two men had harmed the Chicago resident, so they were charged with aggravated assault. The female was charged with prostitution in connection with agreeing to commit a sex act for money. The Chicago resident was charged with solicitation of a sex act.
