Alas, there’ll be no trial in the case of an Illinois senior citizen charged with chasing a stripper — his one-time photography subject — and her boyfriend through three North Woods counties.
The bizarre case that began at an Eagle River hotel and played out at high speeds across Highway 70 in January ended with the stripper getting treatment in an Upper Michigan hospital and Benedict Emil Sedivy in jail.
Trial in the matter had been set to begin after Memorial Day, and was sure to have generated the biggest buzz in Florence County in years.
But Sedivy, 71, a retired Cicero percussionist who his lawyer said once played with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, pleaded no contest this week to a single count of second degree reckless endangerment.

May 16, 2012. Chicago. A local taxpayer watchdog group, For the Good of Illinois, released surprising findings yesterday from their investigation into the spending habits of Chicago city government. Examining vendor payments spanning from 2002 to 2011, the organization found $74 billion worth of checks drawn from the city treasury. At first glance, two of the more conspicuous recipients are the Admiral Theater strip club in Chicago and the Obama for America PAC. If investigators are correct, the payment to the President’s campaign was not reported and is illegal.

The payments to the Admiral Theater strip club included 16 checks that ranged from $1.20 to $1,900. In total, the strippers and their employer received $5,197.78 during the above timeframe. Neither party has disclosed what services city officials received in exchange for payment.

It is through Roxy that Goldthwait the writer both gets to have the most fun and runs into the film’s biggest problems. Roxy is a psychopath. Sure, she may be right that Diablo Cody is the “only stripper who suffers from too much self-esteem” or that “Glee” is bad for America, but her continuous criticism of the world around her overtakes the film to the point that Frank becomes too much of a secondary character. And Roxy becomes less and less likable to the point that she becomes difficult to root for in any way. Yes, I understand that she’s supposed to be broadly painted in order for the satire to work but then Goldthwait fumbles the final arc of the character. I’m not going to spoil anything but Roxy doesn’t work for me, especially given how I think we’re supposed to feel about her during the ridiculous ending (which is clearly a place that Bobcat Goldthwait wanted to go as a filmmaker but that never feels like anyplace that Frank or Roxy would go as characters).
