Defendant claims attorney didn’t tell him, demands a new lawyer
A Chicago-area massage parlor owner’s federal trial came to an abrupt end last week when a masseuse recognized the owner’s attorney as a client while she was testifying.
Alex “Daddy” Campbell stands accused of exploiting women in the country illegally while they worked at his massage parlors, according to the
Chicago Sun-Times. Women testified that Campbell forced them to perform sexual favors during the massages and pay him thousands of dollars under threat of deportation.
Ukrainian immigrant Liudmyla “Liuda” Ksenych recognized Campbell’s court-appointed attorney, Douglas Rathe, as her client while she testified last Monday, according to the Sun-Times.
Rathe admitted to U.S. District Court Judge Robert Gettleman that he got too friendly with the masseuse, even giving her a bottle of perfume, but maintains there was never any sexual contact.

Trials & Litigation Massage Parlor Mistrial Declared After Masseuse Recognizes Defense Lawyer as Client
A Chicago federal judge declared a mistrial last week in a sex-trafficking prosecution after a masseuse who worked for the defendant and testified for the prosecution recognized the defense lawyer as a client.
After stepping down from the stand, masseuse Liudmyla Ksenych told prosecutors she recognized defense lawyer Douglas Rathe, report the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune.
The revelation prompted U.S. District Court Judge Robert Gettleman to declare a mistrial in the case against a massage parlor owner accused of threatening immigrant women to extort money and force them to into sex trafficking.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Diane MacArthur said in a court hearing there is no indication that Rathe asked for any extras during his massages, the Sun-Times says. Rathe told the newspaper there was no sex.

LADY Saw and reggae crooner Beres Hammond sizzled on the Sumfest stage last Friday as they delivered an emotionally charged performance of She Has Changed, a tune penned by Lady Saw.
There was no missing the deep emotions expressed as the two put their all in bringing the words of the song to life. At the end the two received loud cheers from the crowd who knew they had witnessed something special.
In a follow-up interview about the song, Lady Saw said she was inspired to write the song through a personal experience she had.
“I wrote it because of certain little girl from the country,” she said, adding that she literally watched a sweet girl transform into an uncontrollable teenager who just wanted to roam the streets and visit massage parlours.

2 charged in prostitution sting
A check of Buffalo Grove massage parlors led to the arrest of two women who propositioned undercover officers, police said Wednesday.
Myeong Hi Lim, 64, of the 2600 block of South Cedar Glen Drive, Arlington Heights, was charged with prostitution July 13 at Sun Spa, 1359 W. Dundee Road.
Solongomaa Tserendori, 42, of the 1400 block of Carol Street, Park Ridge, was also charged with prostitution July 20 at GQ Spa, 1105 Weiland Road.
Police perform periodic checks on the massage parlors in town. Cmdr. Jim Newton estimates there are less than 10 parlors in town.
He said the two arrests were unusual.
“We haven’t had any problems in a while,” he said. “We try to do these on a regular basis. To get two within a week is a little unlikely, but that’s what happened.”

Across town, Gibbons is admiring the posters for his upcoming campaign for mayor when his aide lets him know that Teresa has launched a grand jury investigation against him. Elsewhere, Elizabeth Killian asks Liam to go on a date with her. He refuses, citing Killian’s objections to mixing his daughter up with the mob. However, she reveals that she’s already involved with the mob as her father’s accountant. When she answers Liam’s phone, she finds her father on the line ordering Liam to report to him.
At the truck depot, Ronnie’s brother tells Jarek that Ronnie was soliciting advice on whether he should testify or run. Mayor George Pradel, who approved the restaurant’s liquor license late last year, said Show-Me’s has been a good neighbor since opening in February.
“Incidentally, they have pretty girls there, but (the business) is there to sell food and give entertainment,” Pradel said. He added: “Everyone does like to be served by someone who is pleasant and pretty.”
Show-Me’s customer Bryan Polanek, 36, of Downers Grove, said he doesn’t have a problem with the concept.
“There aren’t any poles. I haven’t seen any dances. I haven’t seen them do anything too embarrassing,” he said during lunch hour Tuesday.
Other suburbs, such as Glenview and Elk Grove Village, have struggled with laws regulating massage parlors, as officials attempt to weed out disreputable businesses linked to prostitution while allowing for legitimate therapeutic services.
