Ted’s Take: Don’t be afraid by the outside appearance of this place. Its very subtle doorway with white walls had me thinking I was entering an insurance office or an Asian massage parlor; both places give me the creeps! When I walked inside, I was immediately intrigued. Fourteen doorways. Fourteen different songs. Fourteen parties!!! Owner Steve Han is all about making people happy. He has invested a ton of dough into this place, yet it’s relatively cheap to rent a private room that fits up to 30 people. There’s one counter in the hallway that serves as check-in/fully stocked bar with over 60 different beers. Beautiful flat screen TV’s are in each room to go along with huge wrap-around couches, custom lighting and four microphones. Let ia all hang out at this place because you’re surrounded by friends. Hey, even Brittney and I “sang!” Can’t wait to make this place our company holiday party destination! (Are you listening upper-management?)

New massage parlors will need special permission to open in Chicago
…
Massage parlors will require special permits to open in residential business districts under a plan aimed at curbing prostitution that the City Council approved today.
Ald. Ray Suarez’s measure passed by a vote of 30-8, with some aldermen opposed on the grounds the ordinance makes it too difficult for legitimate massage parlors to open and doesn’t really stop prostitution.
Suarez, 31st, had introduced a plan to ban the parlors in neighborhood shopping districts, but scaled it back in the face of strong opposition from massage organizations. But Ald. Brian Doherty, 41st, said it would make more sense to go after the prostitution fronts more aggressively, rather than create zoning exceptions he said would lead to a needless level of bureaucracy.Existing massage parlors are grandfathered into their current locations, regardless of zoning.

Chicago Massage Parlors: 2 arrested in multi-state prostitution, money laundering scheme; Auburn parlor …
April 30th, 2010 — Chicago massage parlors
The owners and operators of a string of massage parlors in Washington, including one located in Auburn, and California are in custody after agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local law enforcement officers executed federal criminal search warrants at the establishments as part of an investigation into a prostitution and money laundering scheme.
Tham Nguyen, 48, and Suong Tran, 51, both of Burien, were arrested last week. They face charges of conspiracy to transport individuals in furtherance of prostitution and conspiracy to engage in money laundering. A federal grand jury handed down a two-count indictment against them April 21.
According to court documents, the defendants owned and operated three massage parlors in Washington, three similar businesses in California and a legal brothel in Nevada. It is alleged the massage parlors were, in fact, fronts for prostitution.
Chicago Massage Parlors: The Campaign Spot

Cohen would have a steep climb to redefine himself in the eyes of Illinois voters, even by the standards of this state’s tainted political culture. During his primary campaign, the 43-year-old political novice ran on notions of integrity and business acumen. But scrutiny of Cohen’s background after the election revealed troubling facts and false statements.
The most salacious revelation surrounded his 2005 domestic battery arrest, in which his convicted prostitute girlfriend alleged he put a knife to her throat. The case was dropped when she didn’t show up in court, but in explaining his side of the story, Cohen made statements that turned out to be false. He said he had met the woman in a bar, but later acknowledged that he met her when he was a patron at the massage parlor where she was arrested for performing sex acts for money. Cohen also said the woman would vouch for his character, but she issued a statement through a lawyer saying he was not fit to hold office.

Chicago Massage Parlors: Human Rights Day: FBI agent offers ways to stop human trafficking
April 20th, 2010 — Chicago massage parlors
Even in Indiana, Americans are used to seeing seasonal migrant workers come in to work at farms harvesting vegetables and fruits and doing labor that is too exhaustive, tedious or low-paying for U.S. citizens. But even though those migrant workers are sometimes found to live in horrendous conditions, Prendergast said, they are voluntary workers and many of them send a portion of their pay to their native countries to help other relatives.
There have been cases, however, where migrant workers are actually “slaves” who have paid their way to be illegally smuggled into the U.S. and now are working off their debt by earning wages for the human trafficker.
In another recent case, a sex ring was uncovered at a northern Indiana massage parlor operation that extended to several affluent cities. While each business seemed harmless in practice, and did offer massages, it also offered sex services for an extra fee.
Chicago Massage Parlors: Illinois Rescue and Restore holds outreach day
April 20th, 2010 — Chicago massage parlors
Illinois Rescue and Restore goals are to reach out to potential victims, collect data, educate first-responders, prosecute offenders and provide help to the victims of human trafficking. According to the U.S. Department of State, the number of annual victims of human trafficking across international borders worldwide is approximately 800,000 and between 14,500 and 17,500 of those victims are trafficked into the U.S., other sources estimate that up to 27 million people are in some form of slavery around the world. In Illinois, it is estimated that around 16,000 to 25,000 women and girls are victims of commercial sexual exploitation in Chicago every year.
Traffickers often take away the victims’ travel and identity documents, telling them that if they attempt to escape, the victims or their families back home will be harmed. Many men, women and children that are encountered in brothels, sweat shops, massage parlors, agricultural fields and other labor markets may have been forced or coerced into those situations and are potentially trafficking victims. Fraud plays a big part to lure people into trafficking situations, offering false jobs, money, fame or even love.

Chicago Massage Parlors: Council balks at massage parlor ordinance
April 16th, 2010 — Chicago massage parlors
… It’s effect will be to jeopardize a licensed element of Chicago’s business community that provides quality, well-paying jobs and a sought-after service in almost all of Chicago’s 50 wards,” said Tracy Smodilla of the Massage Therapy Association.
A better approach, she said, would be to have all massage establishments to submit proof they have state licenses. She also said the ordinance will affect businesses like salons that offer massage therapy as an added service.
“Not only is this ordinance unnecessary, but it does not specifically address one of the key issues it is set out to stop,” said Kim Schilf, president and CEO of the Lincoln Park chamber. “Massage parlors are licensed, taxpaying businesses in Chicago and deserve the support of the community.”
The proposed ordinance would ban massage parlors in confined business districts that essentially serve the surrounding neighborhoods. They will be allowed in areas that have more commercial development. A council committee had recommended approval.
