An estimated 1.2 million Americans and millions more around the world have HIV. Unless the virus is treated with antiviral drugs, it can turn into full-blown AIDS. Antivirals have made the disease more manageable and allowed patients to live much longer than when the epidemic began in the early 1980s.
Nevertheless, about 50,000 new infections are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, a number that has held steady for about 15 years.
Truvada represents “a pretty radical step, but I think it’s a necessary step,” said Sterman, who prescribes it to infected patients and those who are healthy but at risk. “We’ve come as far as we can with condom use and safe-sex strategies.”
The drug would be recommended for people at high risk of getting the virus, such as gay men with multiple sex partners, prostitutes and people whose partners are infected.

US interviews Colombian prostitute in Madrid

WASHINGTON (AP) – Nearly four weeks after the Secret Service prostitution scandal erupted, U.S. government investigators on Thursday interviewed the Colombia prostitute at the center of the affair, which cost eight officers and supervisors their jobs and became an election-year embarrassment for the Obama administration.

In a radio and television interview from Madrid on May 4, Londono said she works as a prostitute in Colombia, catering to foreigners. She said after leaving Colombia, she spent some time in Dubai before going to Madrid.

Since the incident in Colombia, there have been several media reports of similar Secret Service misconduct in the past, including allegations that officers hired strippers and prostitutes during a presidential trip to El Salvador last year.

CHICAGO Three Mexican brothers were sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to operate an interstate prostitution ring that relied on women who were smuggled in from Mexico and Central America and coerced into working for the trio.
Gregorio, Jose Luis and Norberto Hernandez-Castilla operated a score of bordellos in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio and provided women to prostitution rings in New York, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri and Florida, the U.S. Attorneys Office in Indianapolis said.
The brothers, who were living in the United States illegally, managed the criminal enterprise from Indianapolis and Chicago.
Gregorio was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison, while his siblings each received prison terms of 51 months.
Forced into prostitution to repay the brothers for smuggling them into the United States, the women were moved on a weekly basis between the various locations.

The commander of the U.S. Northern Command this week directed all military personnel assigned to security duties at the NATO summit in Chicago to refrain from soliciting prostitutes or drinking alcoholic beverages, according to a copy of the orders.
Army Gen. Charles H. Jacoby, the Northcom commander, stated in a May 6 memo that troops in Chicago during the summit that begins May 20 will not “solicit prostitutes or engage in conduct which is unprofessional or unbecoming of a member of the armed forces.”
One military officer called the restrictions “an overreaction to recent Secret Service misconduct in Colombia.”

The order follows the sex scandal involving 11 U.S. Secret Service agents and 12 U.S. Southern Command military personnel linked to the use of prostitutes while working as security agents for the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena last month.

Evanston massage rules misguided, therapists say
Massage therapists opposing proposed city zoning limits on their businesses say the rules would do nothing to solve the problem they claim to address.
Steve Rogne, owner of Zen Shiatsu Chicago, at 825 Chicago Ave., says the rules would only impose special use permit requirements on businesses that claim massage as their main business activity.
But both the prostitution busts in the past year, Rogne says, occurred at businesses operating as spas or aupuncture centers — which, along with physical therapy clinics and medical offices, would be exempt from the ordinance’s requirements.
And Rogne says the fear expressed in the proposed ordinance that a “clustering” of massage businesses would damage a neighborhood is unfounded.
In his neighborhood, Rogne says, within a two-block radius, at least four businesses offer massage and bodywork services.

Texas-bred, Chicago-based actress Deanna Dunagan won a Tony Award for playing Violet Weston, the pill-popping, rapier-tongued, cancer-wracked Oklahoma mother of three adult daughters in Tracy Letts’ “August: Osage County.” But now, in the Writers’ Theatre revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music,” set in 1900, she is playing Madame Armfeldt, the still elegant if elderly Swedish courtesan recounting her “liasons” with a French baron, an Italian duke and a Belgian king. She also wonders why women like her daughter, a glamorous actress forever on the road, now settle for so much less.

Architect Joe Jemsek (the “Patriarch’s” grandson) has even prepared a concept design for a 3000-yard, par-35 course, including a driving range, which can be seen above and to the right. The leaders of the proposal are Western Springs residents Michelle Kosik and Arthur Poletti, back-to-back neighbors in Timber Trails and Ridgewood, respectively. The idea, they said, was largely born of horror at the concept offered by the group Openlands that Unit II be preserved as undeveloped green space.
Kosik and Poletti claim that forest preserves and open spaces are hotbeds for crime, drug abuse, sex cruising and prostitution, citing Bemis Woods as an example. The reality of close-to-home danger was made clear, they say, by the shocking October 2011 Kelli O’Laughlin murder that occurred just a few hundred yards south of Timber Trails.

Massage therapists work over Evanston’s proposed rules
Members of Evanston’s Zoning Committee Monday night decided a staff plan to regulate massage businesses needs more work, after two massage therapists explained what they see as its flaws.
Sarah McLaughlin and Louise Rosenberg, both licensed massage therapists associated with the Heartwood Center in Evanston, told the committee composed of Plan Commission members that while they weren’t necessarily opposed to some regulation, the proposed ordinance would likely be both overly restrictive and ineffective.
The ordinance, proposed after three women were arrested on prostitution charges at two different massage parlors during a one year span, targets businesses that offer massage as their primary purpose, and would subject them to the city’s special use approval process.
A staff memo accompanying the draft ordinance also suggests imposing a 1,000 foot separation requirement betweeen massage businesses — claiming they “sometimes cluster together in areas that are distressed and have the potential to discourage other useful retail businesses from establishing in such areas.”
