Yet since early 2009 President Obama has sought to enshrine “prolonged detention” of terrorism suspects into the legal system. Such detention would prevent suspects from gaining access to courts to address charges brought against them, even though that is guaranteed in the constitution’s sixth amendment. Obama finally got his wish. Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes language that will allow for exactly the sort of detention envisioned in 2009, months after Obama took office.
A constitutional scholar not only neutering constitutional protections but codifying such denigration (with the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act), is as incongruous as seeing Tim Tebow in a brothel…with a Super Bowl ring on. So the only change in an Obama era would be that such detention was above Supreme Court review, because it would become existing law and no doubt strengthened over time with through case law.

Charges dropped 17 years after murder in Chicago
Cook County prosecutors are dropping the cases against four men who each spent more than 15 years in prison. The four men were teenagers when they confessed to the 1994 rape and murder of a Nina Glover, a prostitute on Chicago’s South Side. But last year new DNA testing pointed to another man, Johnny Douglas, and the four convictions were thrown out.
In a hearing Tuesday that lasted just a minute, prosecutors told the judge that they’d been re-investigating the case and had decided not to retry it. The men said little as they left court.
“It’s a great day. It’s all I can say it’s a great day. The judge made the right decision today and I’m grateful,” said Michael Saunders, one recently released men.

Readers responded too—by coming forward with their own stories. “After the story ran, we had to set up a phone bank in the city room,” says Sun-Times photographer Jim Frost. The complaints about shakedowns were the same as ever, he says, “but now people would actually talk.”
The Sun-Times ran stories from the Mirage investigation for almost a month solid. The paper named names of inspectors and accountants, of contractors who passed along bribes, of a gun-runner who did some business in the bar, and of the people who ran the brothel down the street. 
None of them denied that the stories about them were accurate. (The manager of the brothel did complain, says Zay Smith, that the stories about his business were “too accurate—apparently he thought it was in bad taste.”  That is, he didn’t think a family newspaper should print that kind of thing.)

Joliet man charged with soliciting prostitute, and more
These arrests were taken from Joliet Police arrest information, as well as information from the Will County Adult Detention Facility and Will County Circuit Clerk’s Office.
Robbery
A 21-year-old Joliet man from the 1100 block of Hobbs Drive arrested around 9:15 p.m. Jan. 7 on the 500 block of Cass Street is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 30 for a preliminary hearing on a charge of aggravated robbery and using the credit card of another. Bail was set at $250,000. A 20-year-old Joliet man from the 500 block of Sherman Street arrested at 1:10 a.m. Jan. 10 on the 700 block of North Hickory Street for robbery is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 31.

A 38-year-old Joliet man from the 300 block of East Washington Street was cited Dec. 11 for soliciting a prostitute during an 11:10 p.m. police contact at Cass and Herkimer streets.

Sincerely, America, which held its first event in October, is collecting online signatures to petition for an end to the so-called “Brothel Law,” the Evanston zoning ordinance that prohibits more than three unrelated people from living together.
Volunteers from the group wrote “Save the Brothels,” “Get engaged” and the site’s name in purple. Both the orange and purple paints are water-soluble, Manti said.

“The Brothel Law is our first test,” said Manti, Sincerely, America’s chief of staff. “We want to make noise but then focus it, hone it and put it toward something good and concrete.”

“I thought it was some kid making a statement about walking on the correct side of the sidewalk,” Communication sophomore Rachel Marchant said. “But I think the Brothel Law is stupid.”

Sincerely, America seeks to be a bipartisan organization that engages students in multiple ways, from petitions to end the Brothel Law to registering voters, he said.

The main order of business is the past, from ancient law to the Arab Spring, said James Grossman, the association’s executive director. People worldwide came to explore topics touching every continent and period of history, and focusing on farmers, nuns, kings, juvenile delinquents, mosquitoes, monsters and nomads, you name it.
“The issues are important: whether the transformation of life in the Amazon, the roots and effects of nuclear disasters or the intricacies of Chicago politics, we need to understand why historical context nearly always matters,” said Grossman, formerly a top official at the Newberry Library.
The gathering’s eclectic essence offered many alternatives Thursday afternoon.
There were dueling panels on “The (Scholarly) World Absorbs the Text: Learning and the Literal Sense of Scripture in Early Modern Europe,” “Citizen Soldiers and Civil Disorder: The National Guard, 1877-1908” and “The Politics of Respectability Reconsidered: Using the Framework of Respectability to Examine Southern Lesbian History,” among others.
I was torn between “Reconciling Medieval Communities: Priests, People and Prostitutes” and “U.S. State Archives and Government Information Secrecy: Access and Historical Research.”

Naperville masseuse charged with prostitution

(WHEATON) For Naperville masseuse Alecia S. M. Lonsdale, your garden-variety client simply wouldnt do. Lonsdale made it clear she was interested only in upscale, polite gentlemen, according to a written Naperville police report.
An unnamed, undercover police officer might or might not have fit that bill, but he apparently amassed enough evidence to arrest Lonsdale last week on a misdemeanor charge of prostitution.
Lonsdale, 37, lives on the 800 block of Corday Drive, in the Amli at Naperville apartment complex in the far west-central part of the city. She was arrested about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday in her home, after allegedly offering to perform a sex act for money, police Sgt. Gregg Bell said.

In addition to prostitution, Lonsdale was charged with violating the massage licensing act, according to records on file in DuPage County Circuit Court. She apparently has no criminal record in DuPage County or Will County, court documents indicated.

… Nina” smoked crack and sold sex on Chicago’s South Side for 33 years, racking up dozens of arrests, spending years in prison and losing custody of her seven children. One morning in November 2010, she tried to sell sex to an undercover police officer and wound up in jail again. She thought she was heading back to prison, but instead, she was offered a spot in an experimental new courts program aimed at rehabilitating prostitutes.
There are an estimated 16,000 to 25,000 prostitutes in the Chicago area, and their stories are remarkably similar. Most were sexually abused as children, started using drugs early and ran away from home. Most started selling sex between the ages of 12 and 14, oftentimes after being recruited by pimps. And most get arrested repeatedly — dozens, even hundreds of times — before they get off the streets, if they manage to get off the streets at all.

Chicago, IL-(ENEWSPF)- A 39-year-old Bolingbrook man was arrested earlier today on charges he recruited and forced a minor female to engage in prostitution. The arrest was announced by Robert D. Grant, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

According to the complaint, CARSON has been actively recruiting young females, including minors under the age of 18, to work for him as prostitutes in and around the Chicago area since at least 2010. CARSON advertised their services over the Internet and used cellular telephones to schedule and book “dates” for the girls. CARSON is believed to have employed others to assist him with running his prostitution operation, driving the girls to motels, hotels, and other locations to meet with customers.
