There was a teenager named Ivan, two haggard, middle aged women whose names I didn’t catch, and a middle aged man named Slavica who wore a garish jacked with the words CHICAGO HAPPY MEMBER CLUB emblazoned in a huge font across his back. I couldn’t help but note the irony: I was spending my 30
birthday with a member of the Chicago Happy Member Club, rather than with my wife in Chicago.
Immediately after sitting down, Slavica slid the compartment door shut, lit up a cigarette, and blew the smoke right in my face. I pointed to the no-smoking sticker on the door. Deirdre said although Al Capone died on her 7th birthday, they were a strong family of immigrant Italians, and she still remembers some things about him. She also said they family every Sunday had dinner at their grandmother’s house, and she heard stories from Al Capone’s siblings until she was in her 30s.
The family knew she would write a book someday, Deirdre said, but asked she not do so until all the original family members passed away.
As for Al Capone’s reputation for violence, Deirdre said the only crime he was ever convicted for was income tax evasion.
“Was there bloodshed? Yes,” Deirdre said. “I attribute that to the kind of Wild West.” If someone got into the business, Deirdre said, which was gambling, alcohol and prostitution, they knew what you were getting into. If you did something against the rules, you got punishment, she said.

A 22-year-old Milwaukee woman is charged with prostitution following a sting by undercover officers at a Schaumburg hotel Friday.
Cook County prosecutors said Ashley Evans offered to perform a sexual act for $75 to an undercover Schaumburg police officer. She was arrested at the hotel in the 2000 block of N. Roselle Road just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
Court papers indicate police set up the sting by contacting Evans through an advertisement on a website. Evans was convicted of prostitution in 2007, authorities said.
She is being held at the Cook County jail in lieu of a $2,000 bond. Her next court date is Feb. 28.

Illinois’ human rights department says it’s found substantial evidence of discrimination at the Chicago office of a German industrial conglomerate.
A former employee who is African American has alleged a pattern of discrimination and racially insensitive comments when he worked at ThyssenKrupp. The firm denies any wrongdoing.
The finding by the Illinois Department of Human Rights paves the way for Montrelle Reese to file a lawsuit against the company. He plans to seek more than $250,000 in damages.
Reese was a sales representative at ThyssenKrupp Elevator in Chicago from November 2007 to January 2010. He claims a “non-black” co-worker performed a skit in blackface at a regional conference in 2009 and that his white co-workers refused to travel to black neighborhoods alone, making disparaging comments about crime, drugs and prostitutes.

A. Phillip Randolph (1889-1979) 
A member of the Socialist Party of America, by the mid-1910s, A. Phillip Randolph was a popular soapbox speaker in Harlem, arguing against the injustices of the capitalist system. A few years later, he served as editor of the influential black leftist magazine The Messenger.
Randolph wrote in an editorial, “Most Negro families are on the brink of poverty, they are not striving to live but they are struggling to keep from dying…private ownership of the tools of production…is the mother of poverty, ignorance, crime, prostitution, and race prejudice.”

Let’s face it — Mayor Rahm Emanuel has no idea how to handle Chicago’s “Rooftop Reverend,” Pastor Corey Brooks. For the last 10 weeks, Brooks has been living in a dark green tent atop the now-shuttered Super Motel at the corner of 66th and King Drive.
Back in 2010, Brooks and his congregation began their fight to get the city to shut down that same motel. The 43-year-old pastor said the run-down blonde building, which sits across the street from his New Beginnings Church, had long been a neighborhood hotspot for drugs, prostitution and gun violence. But even after Brooks and his flock convinced the city to close the motel, the vacant building continued to be a hub of criminal activity.
And Brooks continued to bury young men who were shot to death in that same neighborhood.

Town-gown relations between Northwestern students and Evanston residents have never been great, but they’ve taken a distinct turn for the worse in the past two years. First there was the massive overreaction to football tailgating before the only night game of the year—something other Big Ten college towns like Bloomington, Indiana; Madison, Wisconsin; Columbus, Ohio; Ann Arbor, Michigan; etc., have to deal with en masse every fall, but Evanston seems too prudish to confront. Then the town threatened to enforce its antiquated “brothel law” limiting the number of unrelated persons residing under the same roof, slowly backed away under pressure from students and the university, then went ahead and ramped up enforcement anyway without notice. After an ordeal like that, I can understand why current students would view closing down The Keg not as an effort to curb underage drinking among anyone outside of the Northwestern community, but rather as a move that directly targets other parts of the Evanston social scene.

… “@WCAS” no not on this issue– that would be ridiculous since they are in fact enforcing the law. My point was more that in the city’s ongoing tete-a-tete with the university population, one day they are going to go a bridge too far. Lately Evanston has been “stepping up” enforcement of various ordinances in what many believe is direct targeting of students. My point is, one day they are going to go one provocation too far and end up with a riot or a lawsuit. Not on drinking laws, obviously, because that has been thoroughly approved of by the federal government, courts, etc. however , as a law student (so yes, I am in fact aware of how the legal system works), courtesy of my free and unlimited access to lexisnexis, started researching some cases on tenant law and the 14th amendment. If students can prove standing to sue, and unequal application of the “brothel” law against only students, they might have …

The thing we also know is that the study is right, and that’s rare.
Most of us, deep in our hearts know why it is right.
The survey right because we have a political class and a advocate class that roils the waters of race constantly.  Each group uses the charges of racism to their own advantage and, ultimately, to line their own pockets.
Number one in the Advocate class of race pimps is Jesse Jackson.  He has been living off of Dr. Martin Luther King’s wounds for nearly a half a century.  He has managed to do that with no vow of poverty and with a never-ending stream of camera-butt-ins.  Then there are the Jesse Wanna-be Jacksons doing their best to take the masters place, but they lack the ability and speed-to-camera that Jackson has sharpened over the last half century.
