SUSPENDED Labor MP Craig Thomson is set to tell federal parliament he never used union funds to pay for prostitutes, but Prime Minister Julia Gillard probably won’t hear his much-anticipated explanation.
The PM is in Chicago for a major NATO summit and has suggested she won’t be watching when Mr Thomson rises to his feet around midday on Monday – which will be late Sunday evening in the United States.
“Look, I’ll be focused on the work here at the summit,” Ms Gillard said when asked if she’d be tuning in to the lower house.
Nevertheless, most eyes will be on the former Health Services Union (HSU) boss when he attempts to explain how Fair Work Australia (FWA) found he spent $500,000 of union funds on escort services and personal and election campaign expenses.

Mr Thomson will tell parliament he didn’t use his union credit card to pay for prostitutes, that his signature was forged and his driver’s licence number was used by someone else.

Miguel Antonio Joaquin, 21, of the 3600 block of Landsdown Avenue, was arrested at 1:04 a.m. near Eldorado Court and Skylane Drive, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, expired registration and possession of cannabis. His bail was $3,000.

Citing unanswered questions, licensing committee agrees to meet again in June

During what was scheduled to be their final meeting Thursday night, members of Evanston’s Rental Unit Licensing Committee unanimously voted to meet again in June to keep debating what would happen to landlords if their licenses were revoked, among other issues.
The committee is charged with finalizing a proposed ordinance that would allow the city to inspect rental units for compliance with building and safety codes, including the “brothel law,” before issuing licenses to the properties.

Human Trafficking, Prostitution Expected to Increase During Summit
Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office says crimes of sexual exploitation will not be ignored
The NATO Summit hitting Chicago this weekend is expected to bring the city a lot of things, including an increase in prostitutes.
With a recent crackdown on human trafficking in the streets of Chicago, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said Wednesday that law enforcement will have their eyes peeled for sexual exploitation during the summit to further deter sex trafficking in the city.
Studies have shown that that demand for this type of sexual activity increases with major events, Alvarez said in a statement.
She said the charges brought this week against one alleged trafficker should send a strong message to both criminals and their potential customers that the activity will not be ignored.

I first found out about Terkel’s seminal work, Working, when I was 11. The local Catholic high school put on the musical version of the play, and my dad took my sister and I to see the production. A few years later I found the book in a local library. I read that book cover to cover, though not straight through. Discovering the different jobs that people did (autoworker, organizer, grocery clerk, prostitute, typist) opened my young mind to the possibility that there were many different jobs out there, done by many different people, in all corners of our society and country. That someone could put together such an expansive and sweeping tome, that could give voice to people that I might not otherwise have ever known existed, let alone tell the story of their work lives with power and dignity changed the way that I saw both the world around me, but also the written word and how it could be used.

There will always be those individuals willing to prostitute themselves on behalf of those who would happily round them up and send them to the camps. Their existence raises many disturbing aspects of human psychology. However, there is one thing their existence does not do: justify the bigotry they promulgate.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Police won’t just be handling security and protecting visitors during the NATO Summit.
The Cook County state’s attorney says they’ll also be watching for prostitutes.
WBBM Newsradio’s Regine Schlesinger reports, State’s Attorney Anita Alavarez says anybody looking to be a sex tourist in Chicago this weekend will go away disappointed.
She says with an expected increase in demand for prostitutes, police will be on high alert for sex trafficking.
In a statement, she says the sexual services of young men and women are not for sale in Chicago.
She will do everything in her power to ensure juveniles are not being exploited.
